 Pond & Lake Liner Protection

Lets face it pond liners are expensive, especially the rubber type i.e Butyl Rubber or EPDM pond liners - so ask yourself why spend so much money on an expensive pond liner only to be sold a lightweight / cheap underlay that is not up to the job? A lot of retailers sell pond liners almost at cost price - but make a hugh margin by selling lightweight or inappropriate matting to "protect" the liner.

Can you imagine if a pond is 8.0m x 6.0m x 1.50m deep for example, that is a lot of water / weight on a pond liner and if a lightweight protective underlay was used on top of i.e shale / sharp stones, then over time there is a good possibility the stone will work it way through the geotextile and eventually puncture the liner.

There also may be an occassion that a person might climb into a pond to i.e. separate water lillies - this extra load may also lead to a premature liner failure.

If buying protective underlay / pond fleece / geotextile underlay from an aquatic outlet or online retailer. Here are some general guidelines

• General ground / rough ground - 250gsm / Polyfelt TS60 260gsm protective underlay
• Box Welded Liners / Tailored Liners Polyfelt TS50 200gsm
• Irrigation tank liners 260gsm / 300gsm / 400gsm dependent upon the tank

Polyfelt TS60 260gsm protective underlay, does not require a sand binding for general ponds. In the photo above we used Polyfelt TS60 260gsm protective matting on a pond with rough substrate measuring almost 1900sqm...so it gives you an idea of the strength of the material.

Nophadrain ND100 Drainage Composite

Drainage plays a critical role in the design and construction of sub-structures. Lack of proper drainage may result in the build-up of temporary hydrostatic pressure due to surface water run off or a broken water main. Subsequently leakage may occur through the structural elements of the building, which could be masonry or concrete. Water can be kept away from prolonged contact with the construction with a well designed drainage system like the NOPHADRAIN 100.

The NOPHADRAIN 100 is a 6 mm high dimpled polystyrene sheet to which a filter fabric is glued. The NOPHADRAIN 100 is placed against the waterproofing membrane. As water seeks the path of least resistance it will flow down to the bottom of NOPHADRAIN 100/120 where it is collected in the NOPHADRAIN STRIP 150 which directs the water into the sewer system

'Enclosure Rites' is the first work to be commissioned along the Wolds Way as part of the the 'Wanderer' project instigated by VHEY (Visit Hull and East Yorkshire.) Located in The Yorkshire Wolds in The East Riding between York and Scarborough the work is sited in the corner of a field adjacent to an ancient ditch and dyke earthwork overlooking the vale of Pickering. Working with local archaeologists the artists Jony Easterby and Pippa Taylor researched various aspects of the rich ancient cultural landscape of the area. Drawing on Bronze age barrow forms, Parisan figures, and the declining Dew pond features of the Wolds the artists have created a manifestation of archaeology alongside the creation of a rich habitat for both flora and fauna. During this process two 3000 year old Bronze age barrow sites were discovered to the North of the proposed site

FLP Coir Bio-logs encased with either 5mm heavy duty coir yarn or 2mm polypropylene netting (diamond shaped) with a nominal mesh size of 50mm. The logs are pre-drilled with 25mm diameter holes at a 250mm depth at 16.5cm spacing or 6 per linear meter (18 holes per 3.0m length). Dry roll weight is 9kg's per linear meter or 27kg's per log.

Coir logs are widely used on stream bank, sea shores and lake shores are controlling the sand slide. It is also used in desert areas for controlling sand over come. Coir logs can be cut into sections and stacked for pond,lake or stream bank stabilization, fluid containment, and a multitude of other applications.

Pond Liner Selection

There are a multitude of pond lining materials currently available on the UK market which include Butyl Rubber, Firestone Pond Liner, PVC, Greenseal Rubber, EPDM,PVC,LDPE AND HDPE. Each offering it's own unique composition and in some cases, restrictive or limited use dependent upon the type of application required.The correct choice of material and quality is therefore extremely important from the outset,as the wrong product or inferior quality could prove to be only a short-term,uneconomical and costly solution should a problem arise.

These days,as with most manufactured products, a material is often "renamed or rebranded" by a distributor/ retailer, either promote their own logo / brand or protect their manufacturing source. i.e Firestone Pond Liner is manufactured by Firestone Building Products USA,it is also marketed and distributed throughout the UK under the Aqualast and Aquacare Rubber brand names amongst others.

Guarantees are they worth it?

Guarantees are usually a "manufacturers warranty" passed onto or extended to the end user. These cover any latent manufaturing defect with the material,obviously does not cover damage caused by i.e. mechanical,animal,vandalism etc,etc.

Guarantees - What is a "Lifetime Guarantee" - under Commercial Law this equates to 25years. Flexible Lining Products Limited could offer a 30year,40year etc, etc like some competitors but the guarantee in affect under UK Law this only equates to only 25 YEARS, so don't be swayed by long term guarantees as just a selling / marketing ploy. - and lets face it, if your pond / lake liner fails i.e. after 5 years most guarantees aren't worth the paper they are written on, as there is usually an "out clause" which can be aligned with the type of failure anyway........

Lastly, beware of companies not offering to offer a guarantee a pond liner unless you buy their protective underlay - the liner would be covered by the manufacturers warranty anyway if there was a latent manufacturing defect. Once again, this is merely a marketing ploy to sell more product.....

Geosynthetics Explained

There are mainly 6 different types of geosynthetics

1. Woven fabrics produced from looms;
In these fabrics,in a majority of cases,the warp and weft threads lie at right angles to one another.
2.Nonwoven fabrics produced on heat bonding or needlepunched machines.
Both types are made from randomly laid fibres which are either heated between rollers until they partially melt together,or are agitated by barbed needles to produce an artifical felt.
3.DSF fabrics produced on a warp knitting machines where the rows of needles effectively knot the fibre intersections to produce a directionally structure fibre(DSF).Fibres are arranged in an orderly fashion,but can be orientated in a variety of directions.
4.Open mesh textile grids and nets made by weaving or warp knitting,as well as geogrids.
5.Impermeable geomembranes,particularly those made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
6.Geocomposite materials such as fin drains,DSF/nonwoven composites and laminated multi-layer composites where nonwovens,wovens and membranes are bonded together

FLP's Greenseal Rubber Swedish Rubber Membranes

In late 2009, inspired by David Walliams channel swim for Sport Relief, Steve came up with a “One Off” plan to cover a great distance and raise a great deal more money than previously! As a father of two children, Steve never took their health for granted and wanted to raise money to help other families in a less fortunate position. There was no contest - The local Children’s Hospice, The Chestnut Tree House was the clear choice, along with the RNLI receiving 20% in recognition of the important work they do saving lives at sea. Whilst most people suggested swimming the Channel, Steve felt that this was a challenge that was somewhat detached from the local people of Sussex, and so the plan was slowly hatched.

Originally called the Pier to Pier Challenge, the idea was to swim from Worthing Pier to Bognor Pier, some 14 miles. Steve called on the significant expertise of Nick White (no relation), the operations manager for the Littlehampton Lifeboat and due to tides and currents, he cleverly devised a route, which involved warmer seas, and more spectators (along with an extra mile or so of swimming) As luck would have it August 13th 2011 carried the strongest tides beneficial to the swim attempt, as well as being the day of the Worthing Birdman, ensuring a halfway crowd of some 20,000 people.

And so, with the plan in place there was no backing out and a 20-month master plan of training and fundraising was set in motion...
